The Mercedes M177 engine is a twin-turbocharged, direct injection V-Eight gasoline engine. It was first introduced in 2010 and it is still in production today. It replaces the Mercedes-Benz M278 and M157 engines and is based on the Mercedes-AMG M133.

 

The M177 engine has a displacement of just under five liters. In stock form it is capable of producing up to 550 horsepower and 560 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission. The 4.0-litre M177 engine is part of the triumvirate engine family and features dual turbochargers between the cylinder banks. Each turbocharger stock can deliver up to 17 psi of boost. The engine is also fitted with direct petrol injection using piezo injectors. In addition to this, it uses Nanoslide cylinder bore liners. The engine also features variable valve timing and an ECO start/stop function.

 

The M177 uses wet-sump lubrication, with the GLC63 and C63 applications using single-scroll turbos, and the E63 and S63 use twin-scroll turbos. The M177 engine was redeveloped with the introduction of a 48V variable-valve unit in late 2019.
